Chiropractors are seeing a rising trend called “Tech Neck”. In this age of technology both children and adults are glued to their devices, whether it is a smartphone, laptop, or tablet. We like to play our favorite apps, watch funny videos, or stay connected to our work responsibilities. When we look at our phones, we do not hold them out in front of us. Instead, we look down, often hunched over, which is not only causing tension and pain in our necks but in our back and shoulders as well. Seeing people with their head tilted forward, hand cradling their device is a common scene now-hence the name Tech Neck!
The average head weighs 10-12 pounds. With good posture this 10-12 pound force aligns straight down and is supported by your neck and spine, as they were built to do. However, as the head starts tilting forward and angling down into the “tech neck position” the weight on the neck increases 2-3 times. Imagine holding a 30lb dumbbell on your neck for the length of a funny cat video or zoom session with your boss!! Ouch!
To minimize the damage and stress from tech neck, you need to be aware of your posture. Bring your device up to eye level and sit up straight with your chest out and shoulders back. Take frequent 10-20 minute breaks between sessions, allowing your neck (and the rest of your body) enough time to stretch and recover. Strengthening your core and neck muscles with targeted exercises can help reduce some muscle tension caused by staring at your devices all day. Some examples include neck rotation exercises and axial retraction exercises. Most effective treatment of tech neck is going to see your Chiropractor!
